Choose a base before choosing your sights
Dali Old Town sits between Cangshan to the west and Erhai Lake to the east. The historic town, the lakeside villages, and the modern city are different places; use the exact neighbourhood name when choosing accommodation.
For a first visit, start by looking near the old town. This is a suggested base for walking, eating, and planning separate outings. Before booking, ask your accommodation how to reach its entrance with luggage and whether your room faces a busy street.
Choose a lakeside stay if spending time by the water is your priority. Compare the actual address and the transfers you will need, rather than choosing solely from a photograph of a lake view. A quiet-looking setting does not tell you how you will reach your next stop.
Three places to build a visit around
Dali Old Town · 大理古城
Start with a walk rather than a checklist. Traditional Bai houses, courtyards, small shops, and places to eat give the town its character. Leave enough time to turn off the main streets and choose an unhurried meal.
Erhai Lake · 洱海
Choose one part of the lake for an outing. Look at the distance from your accommodation, decide where you want to stop, and arrange the return journey before setting off. Seeing a few places well is a more useful starting plan than attempting the entire lakeshore.
Cangshan · 苍山
Treat the mountain as a separate outing. Decide whether you want a viewpoint or a longer walk, then check the relevant access point, current opening information, and weather. Different mountain entrances do not necessarily lead to the same experience.
A gentle two-day starting itinerary
This is an itinerary suggestion, not a fixed tour schedule. Adjust it to your arrival time and interests.
- First day: settle into the old town. Check in, get your bearings, and walk without rushing. Use the evening to choose the following day’s outing and confirm transport.
- Second day: choose the lake or the mountain. Pick one as the main activity, leaving time for the journey back and a meal. If you have another day, use it for the other landscape or a nearby village.
For a shorter stay, protect one substantial block of time in Dali instead of squeezing in several distant stops. For a longer visit, keep a flexible day before booking every excursion.
Arrival: the station is not the old town
Dali Railway Station · 大理站 and Dali Old Town · 大理古城 are different locations. Include the transfer to your accommodation when planning your arrival.
Before buying a ticket, check the station written on your booking and save the accommodation’s complete Chinese address. Ask your host which arrival point is appropriate for their property. Recheck the current timetable and price with the train operator or your booking service; this guide does not quote live fares.
If you are continuing to Lijiang, make that journey a separate part of your plan. Allow for checking out, reaching the station, and getting from the next arrival point to your accommodation.
Save these names before you go
The map links below open OpenStreetMap searches. Confirm the result matches the place you want, especially when a name refers to a whole lake or mountain area.
| Place | Chinese name | Map search |
|---|---|---|
| Dali Old Town | 大理古城 | Find the old town |
| Dali Railway Station | 大理站 | Find the station |
| Erhai Lake | 洱海 | Find the lake |
| Cangshan | 苍山 | Find the mountain area |
Keep these names with your accommodation details. They are useful starting points when searching for directions or explaining a destination to a driver.
