Lijiang Travel Guide: Old Town, Shuhe, Baisha & Where to Stay

Which Lijiang do you want to visit?

“Lijiang Old Town” often means the central Dayan area in travel bookings. UNESCO’s heritage property also includes the Shuhe and Baisha settlements. These are distinct places, so check which one appears in an accommodation address before comparing rooms.

Our starting suggestion is to choose one base and two days of local exploring. You can then add time for landscapes outside the city. A place name on a photograph does not tell you whether a visit fits between check-in and dinner.

Dayan, Shuhe or Baisha as a base

Dayan · 大研古城

Start your accommodation search here if you want to spend your first visit exploring the central old town. Ask where a car can drop you, how far you will carry luggage, and whether the room faces a busy lane. An attractive courtyard and a convenient luggage route are separate questions.

Shuhe · 束河古镇

Consider Shuhe if this settlement is where you want to spend most of your time. Check the actual property position and the return journey from outings to Dayan or elsewhere. Do not assume every room described as “Shuhe” sits beside the streets you plan to explore.

Baisha · 白沙古镇

Choose Baisha as a deliberate base for time in that area, rather than as a default substitute for central Lijiang. Look at transport for evening returns and your next departure. If you stay in Dayan or Shuhe, Baisha can instead be a separate outing without changing accommodation.

What to do without rushing

Make the old town itself an activity: follow a few waterways, turn into courtyard lanes, and stop for a meal. Lijiang’s heritage is connected to its water system and Naxi cultural traditions; it is worth noticing the setting as well as collecting viewpoints.

Choose one other settlement for a second outing. Compare its location with your accommodation and arrange the return before leaving. If a mural, museum or particular building is your main reason for going, check its current visitor access rather than assuming the surrounding village’s accessibility guarantees entry.

A two-day visit, with an optional third

1. Day one: arrive, settle in and explore the settlement where you are staying. Keep the evening flexible and confirm your next outing.
2. Day two: choose Shuhe or Baisha if you began in Dayan, or visit Dayan if you based yourself elsewhere. Leave time for the transfer and an unhurried meal.
3. Extra day: use it for another settlement or a separately planned excursion. Avoid adding several distant places merely because they appear on the same regional map.

This is a suggested structure, not a timed tour. Your arrival and departure days may only provide a short walk rather than a full day’s sightseeing.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Tiger Leaping Gorge

Treat Jade Dragon Snow Mountain · 玉龙雪山 as a distinct outing. Choose the experience you want and verify the current booking, access, weather and transport arrangements before reserving. A mountain seen from the city is not automatically an easy addition to a city afternoon.

Tiger Leaping Gorge · 虎跳峡 also needs its own plan. A viewpoint visit and a walking itinerary have different access points, time needs and onward transport. This city guide does not provide a verified hiking route. Do not reserve a trek solely from an overview map or assume you will finish in time for a tightly scheduled train.

Getting here and continuing your journey

Save Lijiang Railway Station · 丽江站 separately from your old-town accommodation. Ask your host for the best luggage drop-off point and confirm the full transfer, not just the train journey.

If arriving from Dali, give yourself time to reach the station and check in again in Lijiang. If continuing to Shangri-La, choose whether you are travelling directly or adding another stop; those are different travel days. Check current timetables with the operator or booking platform.
